The project involves a small side and rear wrap around extension to this property’s existing outrigger to provide an enlarged kitchen and dining space plus new ground floor WC. The large roof light and new sliding doors will flood the property with light and connect it to the courtyard garden. White render externally ties the extension to the existing house and a restrained pallet of colours and finishes complete the space internally.

Early concept design explored the use of simple curved corners to the plan which echo features of nearby buildings soften the impact of the proposals into the garden and sit the new house into the locality over a brick plinth to ground the new structure. A green roof added interest and improves local biodiversity. Internally, the roof joists were exposed to provide further interest and volume to the space. These aspects were simplified in the construction phase due to sharp increase in costs experienced in building industry.
